Welcome to the fall 2019 semester! This brief update serves as a quick guide to important activities, dates, initiatives, and contacts that will help you navigate this semester at VCU. For up-to-date information on key initiatives and opportunities as well as a directory of contacts, visit provost.vcu.edu.

Supporting student success

With the support of VCU’s Student Success unit, all faculty teaching undergraduate classes are urged to provide vital feedback to students early in the semester through Progress Reports (to be submitted between Sept. 3-23) and Midterm Grades (due by Oct. 25). Detailed instructions are at studentsuccess.vcu.edu/early-notification/. Due to the compelling evidence that midsemester feedback supports student success, we ask all faculty members teaching undergraduate courses help us reach the goal of 100% participation in midsemester grade submissions for undergraduate courses.

Navigate (formerly SSC Campus) links administrators, advisors, deans, faculty, staff and students to proactively manage student success. Faculty can use Navigate to submit Progress Reports and share attendance records with advisors by logging in at vcu.campus.eab.com. Students are encouraged to download and use the Navigate Student app to make appointments with advisors, schedule tutoring sessions in the Campus Learning Center, and engage with additional student success partners like the Writing Center, VCU Career Services, the Transfer Center and Student-Athlete Support Services. Learn more at studentsuccess.vcu.edu/navigate/.

Major Maps, launched last academic year, allow academic and career advisors, faculty, family members, and employers to help students create individualized success plans geared toward their professional goals.  Explore the maps with your students at majormaps.vcu.edu/.

The former Welcome Week is now Weeks of Welcome (WoW) and runs through Sept. 28. The six-week stretch of programs includes more than 100 activities designed to help students become acclimated with the VCU and Richmond communities, as well as the many academic resources available. Access the WoW guidebook and encourage your students to participate.

Supporting faculty success

Read an open letter from past Faculty Senate president Scott Street (2017-19) outlining recent accomplishments and opportunities for faculty involvement. Visit facultysenate.vcu.edu/news/president-letter/.

The Office of the Provost invites faculty to apply for the Faculty Fellows program. Selected Faculty Fellows will serve in part-time, administrative roles working directly with senior leaders in developing and implementing key programmatic initiatives to support VCU’s faculty. Applications for the Faculty Fellows program are open through Sept. 9. Visit provost.vcu.edu/faculty/faculty-resources/fellows/

Applications for mentees and mentors are being accepted through Sept. 16 for VCU’s Faculty Peer Mentoring Program. The program provides a formal opportunity for early career tenure-line faculty members to receive advice and guidance from a tenured faculty member outside their own department. Visit provost.vcu.edu/faculty/faculty-resources/mentor/

Join us for the first VCU Faculty Club of 2019-20 on Sept. 6 at the Institute for Contemporary Art. This informal monthly event, which is open to all VCU faculty members, provides new possibilities for professional collaborations and the opportunity for faculty members to expand their network of colleagues at the university. For more information and to RSVP, visit go.vcu.edu/facultyclub.

Faculty members who are interested in completing Title IX review panel training should email Justin Moses at jmoses4@vcu.edu for more information. A full day training session will be held at VCU on Sept. 6, 2019 (8:30-4:30 p.m.) and an alternate session is available at UVA on September 16 and 17, 2019.

Fall dates for Write on Site are now available at go.vcu.edu/writeonsite. Write on Site provides a designated space and time for faculty members to research and write in a supportive, distraction-free environment. Faculty can set and share writing goals with other writers and researchers across the university community. Stop by at any time during the session to enjoy a quiet, comfortable atmosphere for writing and research.

The Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence offers trainings and events to support faculty members with teaching, technology, and more. Visit ctle.vcu.edu for more information.

New in Fall 2019

Code of Virginia § 23.1-405(C), amended 7/1/19 -- Federal law generally permits the university to publish a student’s directory information or disclose it to the public, but, importantly, Virginia law requires the university to obtain a student’s affirmative written consent before disclosing their contact information (email address, physical address or telephone number) to anyone except either (1) a FERPA school official or, as of July 1, 2019, (2) a student enrolled in course(s) at VCU. The university has developed a system for seeking consent to share student contact information with members of the university community. For more information, visit rar.vcu.edu/records/student_contact_information/.

VCU is now smoke and tobacco free -- Last spring, VCU approved a universitywide smoke- and tobacco-free policy in an effort to reduce tobacco use, tobacco-related fire hazards and litter, and promote a safe and healthy campus environment. Effective July 1, 2019, all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, are now prohibited on university-owned property — including buildings and vehicles — and only allowed in designated outdoor smoking areas. The new policy applies to students, faculty, staff, contractors and campus visitors. For more information, visit tobaccofree.vcu.edu/
