A Message from the Director

Washington State Celebrates 1,000 employers and 4,300 Veterans Hired through the YesVets Initiative

By WDVA Director, Alfie Alvarado-Ramos

We are truly honored to announce that 1,000 employers have hired more than 4,300 veterans as of this September through the YesVets Initiative.  We know that hiring veterans is a great way to tap an already skilled talent pool and to retain a diverse labor force in our state.

The YesVets Hiring Initiative is a partnership between the Employment Security Department, chambers of commerce, Washington Department of Veterans Affairs and Washington State Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).  This veteran hiring campaign was created to recognize and thank employers who choose to say, “YES” to hiring veterans in Washington State.

After an employer hires a veteran, they are presented with a YesVets window decal and vehicle bumper sticker to display at their business to demonstrate support for America’s veterans. The window decal includes a year sticker to let their customers know how many years they have participated by hiring veterans.  Businesses may receive a new decal each year as long as they have hired a veteran in that current year.

Typically, employers receive their decals at a local chamber of commerce meeting or at their place of business.  They are then featured on social media with the #YesVets hashtag and are invited to an annual YesVets Employer Recognition Event.

To our Veteran Service Organizations and other non-profit partners, you are eligible to participate in YesVets too!  Any employer can sign up and once you hire a veteran, you’ll receive the same recognition as any other business.

I commend the work of our partners in the YesVets Initiative, Employment Security Department, Chambers of Commerce and Washington State Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), for all of their hard work in growing this important campaign that is helping to employ thousands of veterans.  Washington State continues to urge businesses to say “yes” to the state’s veterans when filling open positions.

Interested employers can learn more and sign up before or after hiring a veteran at www.YesVets.org.

Steppin' Country with Walla Walla Veterans Home Residents

Family, friends, residents and staff gathered in the Community Center for a special "Country Hoe Down & Fair".

It was very energetic and festive environment for all that attended and enjoyed the music and dancing from the Steppin' Country group.  We would like to thank all of the volunteers, family members and Steppin' Country members for making this event possible.

Step-by-Step Painting Classes at Washington Veterans Home in Retsil

Recently, veterans at the Washington Veterans Home in Retsil enjoyed a monthly step-by-step painting class.

September’s painting class was an opportunity to say goodbye to summer with all residents painting an ice cream cone with a rainbow background.

Each resident was able to choose to paint their own thing or follow along with the instructions given by the recreation therapy staff at the home.

The paintings usually take 2-3 hours to paint and this program is partially supported by volunteer organizations including the Port Orchard Rotary club, American Red Cross and the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association MN 48-1 Chapter Combat Vets.

The paintings are all proudly displayed each month above the fireplace at the main entrance and throughout the month the proud artists enjoy bringing their family members to the display to show them their work.

Tailgate Party at Spokane Veterans Home

FOOTBALL SUNDAY: On August 29th, the Spokane Veterans Home held their Annual Tailgate Party.

The Spokane Veterans Home had special visitors from the Combat Vet Association join them.  The volunteers barbecued hot dogs and help set up tents for our veterans.

Of course, we held our Annual Tailgate Picture and had fans present from the Seahawks, Steelers, Packers, Rams, and Dolphins. Veterans spent time visiting with the Combat Vet Association, Red Cross volunteers and even listened to some perfect tailgating music.

Veteran Resident, LeRoy was also honored with a shadow box from the Combat Vet Association with his medals and achievements and one of our staff members received medals in honor of her father's service. #WeLoveOurCommunity

Washington Soldiers Home Independence Day BBQ

Washington Soldiers Home residents recently enjoyed a very tasty barbecue picnic prepared by the Dietary Department. The WSH's Administrator, Robert Pence greeted residents with his energetic and loving dog, Luke.  Lively music was performed throughout by the LucasRose Duo. Entertainment and smiles were aplenty via Melon-E The Clown spreading cheer with his smiles, stickers and balloons!

A very special thank you to the WSH Resident Council, the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), local Boy Scout Troop 274-Puyallup, dozens of individual volunteers and all the staff who supported the WA Soldiers Home Picnic! #WeLoveOurCommunity   Washington Soldiers Home Adaptive Gardening Program

Women Veterans Gala - An Affair to Remember

Your Women Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee and Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs recently held the I Am Not Invisible Campaign – An Affairs to Remember Women Veterans Recognition Gala in September at the Emerald Queen Convention Center.

There are more than 57,000 women veterans in Washington State and our number has risen steadily in the past decades. Women represent 10% of the veteran population in our state.

Women veterans continue to face significant barriers and challenges in accessing necessary health care and other services, while experiencing a lack of recognition unlike our men counterparts. By spotlighting Washington Women Veterans, the I Am Not Invisible Campaign aims to increase awareness and dialogue about women veterans, as well as open the eyes of the community on the myriad contributions and experiences women veterans made in their service to our country.

Governor's Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee Town Hall - Centralia

The Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee (VAAC) is a seventeen member committee appointed by the Governor.  Each member is appointed to a term of four years.  Veterans are recommended for appointment to the VAAC by the leadership of nationally recognized Veteran Service Organizations active in Washington State, and two members are appointed as veterans at large.

The VAAC Operates with the motto of No Veteran Forgotten, and serves in an advisory capacity to the Governor and the Director of the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs.  Members divide into small groups and plan Town Hall meetings in locations across the state.

Town Hall meetings serve two purposes:

1) To provide a forum for veterans and their families to learn about the services and resources available in their own communities.
2) To educate VAAC members on issues that are important to veterans and their families across the state so that the VAAC can share this information with the WDVA Director and the Governor.
