A Message from the Director

WDVA Welcomes New Deputy Director

By WDVA Director, Alfie Alvarado-Ramos

I’m so pleased to share with you and our entire Veterans Community the addition of Davie Puente Jr. to our WDVA Team!  David assumed the role of Deputy Director on February 3, 2020 and brings extensive experience overseeing programs focused on public safety, customer service, employment, return to work programs, and human resources.  Each of these areas overlaps with the vision and strategic priorities of WDVA and will serve our team, our residents, clients, and the Veterans’ Community well.

David served in the United States Army Criminal Investigation Command and then transitioned to the Department of Labor and Industries in 1992, as a fraud investigator.  He spent the next 28 years with L&I in a variety of roles, completing his L&I service as the Assistant Director for the Field Services and Public Safety Division.

David has a Bachelor of Science degree in occupational safety and health from Central Washington University.  He enjoys serving his community by officiating baseball and football as a member of the Washington Officials Association. He is also a member of the South Sound Football Official Association, Thurston County Youth Football League, and South Sound Umpires Association.

In the several weeks since he joined WDVA, I think it’s safe to say that David has been inspired by the enthusiasm of our WDVA Team and the incredible array of services we provide.  You will soon see more of David as he visits each of our State Veterans Homes, Veterans Service Centers, and other office locations throughout the state, as well as attending VSO trainings and VAAC Town Halls!

Help us welcome Your WDVA Deputy Director, David Puente Jr.!

Music Therapy at the Walla Walla Veterans Home

Music Therapy is being offered as a weekly recreation program at the Walla Walla Veterans Home (WWVH).  Residents featured are enjoying an afternoon of live music performed by Vic, a fantastic performer and WWVH volunteer.

Vic has a heart for sharing his love of music and performing the songs of his generation with the WWVH residents. Vic’s playlist is uplifting and offers a wide variety to fulfill the musical interests of many. Residents turn out in large numbers to enjoy Vic’s music and reminisce together. We would like to send special thanks to Vic for performing for our veterans. #WeLoveOurCommunity

Spokane Veterans Home Receives New
Transport Bus Lift System

The Spokane Veterans Home recently got an upgrade to their Recreation Therapy Transport Bus Lift System.

Unfortunately, with many wheelchairs becoming bigger and heavier, the home staff have had some difficulties loading and unloading during outings with our veterans.

Dick Hazelmyer spearheaded the mission of acquiring the home an updated lift and on January 16 we were honored to receive a new lift and celebrated by cutting a ribbon and drinking a little apple cider in honor of it.

We would like to send a very special Thank You to Dick and everyone else who helped this get accomplished.

Watch out because we are on our way to many more fun activities with our upgraded bus! #WeLoveOurCommunity

Washington Soldiers Home Enjoy their Super Bowl Party & Bowling Outing

The Washington Soldiers Home in Orting recently held a Super Bowl party with all the snacks and favorite "tailgate food" for residents and their families to route on their "second" favorite team.  During the month of February, Washington Soldiers Home residents had a ball knocking down pins for a visit to the local bowling alley.  We would like to thank everyone who helped volunteer, set these events up and for participating with our veteran residents!  #WeLoveOurCommunity
