SOE ranked #16 Best Public Graduate School of Education by U.S. News & World Report
Dr. Jason Chow teaches a class in Oliver Hall.The VCU School of Education once again ranks among the top graduate schools of education in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report. The school comes in at No. 26 overall in the newly-released 2021 rankings. The school is also No. 16 among public graduate schools of education.

Dr. Gibson named 2020 ACA Extended Research Award recipient
Dr. Donna GibsonDonna M. Gibson, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, interim associate dean for academic affairs, department chair and professor in the Department of Counseling and Special Education, will receive the American Counseling Association’s Extended Research Award for 2020. Over a decade, Dr. Gibson’s research interests and publications include a focus leadership and professional identity development specific to the counseling profession.

Dr. Shakeshaft wins AERA Excellence in Research Award
Dr. Charol ShakeshaftCharol Shakeshaft, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, is the winner of the 2020 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Division A Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education Award. Dr. Shakeshaft received the award based on her research on gender issues in leadership schools and schooling, as well as her research on identification and prevention of school employee sexual misconduct.

Local students visit State Capitol as part of STEM grant
A student visits the State Capitol as part of a STEM grant.Student teams and teachers from four local school districts visited the Virginia State Capitol earlier this month to share with legislative representatives their progress with field investigations into local watershed ecosystems along the James River, as well as plans for future stewardship civic action projects.

Joshua Gentry (M.T. ‘14): Advice from brother fuels career choice
Joshua Gentry, SOE alumnus and 2020 Gilman Teacher of the Year at Hungary Creek Middle SchoolJoshua Gentry (M.T. ‘14) was recently named the 2020 Gilman Teacher of The Year by his colleagues at Hungary Creek Middle School, where he teaches health and physical education. Gentry majored in health sciences, with a focus in health and physical education at VCU and earned his Master of Teaching degree from the VCU School of Education.

Student spotlight

Travon Griffin: ‘I want to help children succeed’
Travon Griffin, undergraduate student in the VCU School of Education.Travon Griffin works full time as a field support specialist at Wells Fargo Advisors in Richmond. After first enrolling in VCU’s Liberal Studies for Early and Elementary Education (LSEE) program in fall 2017, Griffin recently changed his major to the VCU School of Education’s B.S. Ed. in Elementary Education and Teaching. When he completes the program, he hopes to teach first or second grade and find new ways to help children succeed in the classroom.
