Dear VCU Faculty and Staff:

This is certainly an unprecedented time and we must remain vigilant in protecting the health and well-being of the VCU community to the best of our ability. With cases of COVID-19 now identified in the VCU community, it is important that we all follow the same reporting procedures to reduce the risk of further infection. Please note the following procedures and reminders:

  • Reporting positive COVID-19 cases
If a VCU student or employee tests positive for COVID-19, please report it directly to University Student Health or Employee Health. University Student Health or Employee Health will ensure that appropriate state and local health care authorities are provided necessary information and that personal privacy considerations are respected. VCU will follow notification procedures recommended by these authorities.

  • How you will be informed of positive cases that may impact you
Individuals that are determined to have been in close contact with individuals with confirmed cases will be contacted directly by VCU and guided to isolate and monitor their health. Please note, VCU is working closely with local and state health officials as the number of potential exposures to COVID-19 in the Richmond area is expected to grow. Following their guidance, VCU will not issue university-wide communications about each confirmed or suspected case.
When an individual tests positive for COVID-19 and has been in campus facilities, the dean or department head will be provided an email to distribute to notify your school or department about additional cleaning or areas that will be temporarily closed if such a notification is warranted.
  • If you develop symptoms
If you develop symptoms consistent with COVID-19, please contact your health care provider and take immediate action to self-quarantine. COVID-19 symptoms are generally flu-like but may include even mild symptoms such as subjective fever (chills, body aches, malaise), documented fever (even low-grade), and cold symptoms including cough, runny nose, or congestion, or any nausea or gastrointestinal symptoms. For more information about how to report a positive COVID-19 case or what to do if you start experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19, please visit

  • Cleaning and disinfecting
VCU continues to clean daily with EPA approved cleaners effective against COVID-19. Exposed areas and high-touch surfaces are given priority. VCU is following guidance from the CDC, EPA and OSHA regarding isolation, cleaning, disinfection and the protection of students, employees and the public. For more information about VCU’s cleaning and disinfecting procedures, visit

  • Reporting to work starting Monday, March 23
As a reminder, only designated employees are to report to work on campus beginning Monday, March 23. All non-designated employees are to work remotely and are not authorized to be on campus.

Right now, it is crucial that we all do our part to limit community-level and widespread person-to-person transmission. Social distancing, handwashing and disinfecting are more important than ever. For more wellness information, visit
