These Are Our Heroes - Saying Thanks to Your WDVA Team

By WDVA Director, Alfie Alvarado-Ramos

Thank you all who joined your Washington Department of Veterans
Affairs in our virtual Memorial Day observances this year.

Memorial Day 2020 is and was unlike any other.  Our country is in
crisis, fighting an invisible enemy.

The Coronavirus changed the way we gather, how we say goodbye to our brothers and sisters at end of life, and how we lay our fallen to rest.   Our hearts hold high and our minds remember those who served, especially our residents in our Veterans Homes who answered the call from the Supreme Commander to join the formation in the everlasting post.

Your WDVA Team put together a couple Memorial Day tribute videos to help the community
to still be able to remember and honor those who sacrificed it all.

We would like to send special thanks to the Northwest Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America for donating the wreaths for Capitol Campus.  We would also like to send a special salute to the City of Orting, local first responders, community and family members for
making the Washington Soldiers Home Parade an event to never forget.

Washington Veterans Homes Receive Numerous Donations from the Community

Washington Veterans Homes Receives Discounts

Once again, we would like to thank the many community members who have donated face shields, gowns and other items in the past few month.  We would also like to send a very special thank you to the Full Circle Meals Program in Port Orchard, who has helped to provide more than 1,500 meals to our Washington Veterans Home staff.

Our healthcare heroes cannot thank you enough and we are so appreciative to have such an amazing community of support! Thank You #WeLoveOurCommunity #TheseAreOurHeroes

Looking to Donate to Honored Residents and Staff of Washington State Veterans Homes?

We are lucky to have the most supportive community on the planet. We have been in awe for how many of you have reached out to find ways you can assist all of our heroes working every day to provide the highest level of care possible to our honored residents. We are welcoming donations to support our WDVA Team during the COVID-19 response and here are some items they could really use as they continue in Serving Those Who Served.

FACE SHIELDS & GOWNS: We are requesting for specific face shields and hospital gowns to be donated for staff working at our four veterans homes. Please inquire with points of contact listed below for exact specifications needed.

OTHER ITEMS: We are also looking for items for our Transitional Housing Program residents, veterans without homes and to keep our Veterans Homes’ residents spirits up by keeping them engaged and entertained while our regular group activities have been suspended. Please keep in mind that in the current environment and in support of our infection controls efforts, we are currently only accepting new items.

Spokane Veterans Home Welcomes Back Residents from Mann-Grandstaff VAMC in Spokane

This week the Spokane Veterans Home will welcome a number of residents back from the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center. Several residents will return each day and transition from the COVID-19 Unit at the VA Medical Center to the Spokane Veterans Home COVID-19 Recovery Wing.

The Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center and Spokane Veterans Home partnership serving COVID-19 positive residents from the Spokane Veterans Home has provided an enhanced
level of medical care, support, surveillance, stabilization and treatment for early signs of clinical deterioration due to Coronavirus infection for individuals most at risk for complications of COVID-19 infection. It also offered the opportunity for the Spokane Veterans Home to deep clean and ensure the facility is ready to welcome our Veterans and family members Home. These measures have been successful in stemming the outbreak at Veterans Home, with no new COVID-19 cases in residents since May 7 and staff since May 11.
