JANUARY 2022

A Message from the Director

Welcoming In the New Year

As we welcome in the New Year, your Washington Department of Veterans Affairs continues to support and serve the many brave members of our community who served in the Armed Forces.

We are grateful to our veterans and families of all military branches, as well as our Gold Star Family Members who sacrificed so much...

Our mission of “Serving Those Who Served” is one we do not take lightly and we are blessed to have countless veterans and community organizations who share this passion and vision!..

As we look forward to 2022, I am encouraged by our direction, goals and partnerships and excited to see our collective accomplishments.  It is truly an honor having our WDVA Team and our partners side-by-side as we serve veterans and their families.

Transitional Housing Program

Happy Holidays at Transitional Housing Program for Veterans

Transitional Housing Program Veterans had a jolly time during this year’s THP Holiday Celebration.

Along with a special visit from Santa, all residents received a special gift, enjoyed sweet holiday cookies and some even enjoyed a little family time. It is always an honor and a pleasure bringing holiday cheer to our Transitional Housing Program veterans.

We would like to thank our THP staff, family members and volunteers for assisting with making this special event happen this year.

Celebrating the New Year at WSH

Honored residents and staff at our Washington Soldiers Home in Orting had a good time "partying" to bring in the new year.

Fun took place throughout the day with numerous carnival-style games set up for the residents with fun prizes to win, such as corn hole, basketball toss, darts, puzzles and more.

We would like to thank all of our staff and volunteers who helped make 2022 begin with a bang!

Holidays at the Spokane Veterans Home

Our Spokane Veterans Home had the honor of having our local community Air Force heroes from Fairchild Air Force Base help purchase wonderful gifts for all our honored veterans and residents.

Spokane Veterans Home residents even had Santa come to the home and help pass out these gifts. We would like to thank all of the many donors, volunteers and staff members who helped make this possible!

Walla Walla Veterans Home

Santa visited the WWVH residents over the holiday weekend!

The Assistant to the Superintendent of the WA State Penitentiary in Walla Walla contacted us right before Thanksgiving about setting up a Christmas "Giving Tree" at the Penitentiary for our residents.

WWVH Activities Staff were able to talk with residents and families and put together a list of exactly what each resident wanted for Christmas. The team created tags with the resident's first names and the gifts they wanted. The tags were hung on the Giving Tree at the Penitentiary right after Thanksgiving. Staff began taking them off the tree right away.

The Penitentiary staff delivered all of the presents to the WWVH on 12/21/21, and even Santa was present to hand out gifts to residents in the multi-purpose room and throughout the houses.

Veterans Farm at Orting Donates 2,700 Lbs of Farm Produce

“Thank you so much for the ongoing donation of fresh produce from the Veterans Farm. The seniors of Orting truly appreciate it as many cannot physically garden any longer. The fresh produce is a vital staple of nutritious eating and keeping them healthy is our primary goal. The total donation we received was 2700 pounds of beautiful produce in 2021. We look forward to see what you and your crew accomplish this year.” – Staci Guirsch, Director, Orting Valley Senior Center.

Port Orchard Veterans Home

Sounds of Christmas joy and music filled the halls of the Washington Veterans Home in Port Orchard.

Our much welcome guests, the Puget Soundsters visited the Veterans Home and performed numerous Christmas Carols. The residents were encouraged to sing along, and many did just that!

The joy shared by all was a much welcomed event and we are all so very thankful that this group was willing to go through many additional steps to be here safely to spread only the holiday spirit.

Thank you again and we hope to see you soon!

Cemetery Pre-Need Applications

Preneed registration is available and highly encouraged.

Preneed arrangements provide you with the peace of mind that plans for your interment wishes have been made and will not burden your loved ones during what is a very stress filled and emotional time in their lives.

Preneed arrangements are not binding and do not “reserve” a plot. They simply confirm eligibility criteria has been met. A subsequent review will take place at the time of interment scheduling.
