This page details the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (Reserve Bank) approach to personal information collected via this website or via an email address or the various telephone numbers for enquiries posted on this website or on any application (App) developed by or on behalf of the Reserve Bank available to the users of mobile phones and tablet devices.

Why We Collect Personal Information

The primary purposes of the Reserve Bank collecting and holding this personal information include:

  • Delivering links to the latest Reserve Bank news published on the Reserve Bank website to your email inbox via our email service or your mobile phone via SMS.
  • Consulting the broader community and agencies of government on matters relating to the Reserve Bank’s responsibilities.
  • Operating the Help Desk for the Reserve Bank Information and Transfer System (RITS) and maintaining records of authorised signatories and other matters relevant to the operation of RITS (see the Personal Information Collection Notice – Payments Settlements – RITS).
  • Accepting and processing of applications to add a security to, or notify changes to asset-back securities that appear on, one of the lists of securities eligible for purchase under the Reserve Bank’s domestic market operations.
  • Facilitating communication between the Reserve Bank and securitisation industry information providers regarding the Reserve Bank’s repo eligibility criteria for asset-backed securities and the maintenance and operation of the Securitisation System and the provision of administrative and technical support in relation to the Securitisation System (see the Personal Information Collection Notice for Securitisation System Users).
  • Responding to enquiries about Australian banknotes including enquiries regarding reproduction of banknote, damaged banknotes, numismatic banknote arrangements and the provision of educational material.
  • Responding to research enquiries about the Reserve Bank’s archival records collection, including enquiries relating to: records made available in digitised form on, or referred to on, the Reserve Bank’s UnReserved website; obtaining copies of original records held by the Bank; providing physical access to original records at the Reserve Bank’s Research Room.
  • Responding to media enquiries and other enquiries about the Reserve Bank’s functions or activities.
  • Providing tours of the Reserve Bank of Australia Museum to school teachers and students and other community groups; providing disability access to the Museum; receiving feedback in relation to the Museum, its exhibitions and events.
  • Providing presentations and materials to staff at schools and other educational institutions, other educators and students; obtaining feedback on our education program.
  • Managing the Reserve Bank’s recruitment process (see the Personal Information Collection Notice for Applicants).
  • Maintaining a register, for investigative and auditing purposes, of security vulnerability information pertaining to the Reserve Bank’s IT networks supplied by members of the public or other organisations.
  • Receiving and responding to freedom of information applications and enquiries.
  • Undertaking planning, research and statistical analysis.

The Reserve Bank also uses the personal information for the following secondary purposes:

  • Complying with any applicable legal and regulatory obligations.
  • Risk management, accounting and auditing purposes.
  • Learning more about how to provide you with the information you need and otherwise improving processes and services.

How We Collect Personal Information

The personal information is collected when you:

  • send us an email message
  • telephone the general enquiries number or another phone number listed on this website or on an App
  • submit a completed feedback form, registration or booking form or other form or documentation or respond to a survey
  • make a submission to the Bank
  • apply for a job
  • register for our email and/or SMS notification service or otherwise ask to be placed on a mailing list.

Consequences if Personal Information is Not Collected

If the personal information were not collected then the Reserve Bank would not be able to provide the information or other service requested. In particular, without relevant contact details (and in some cases additional information) it cannot:

  • Deliver links to the latest Reserve Bank news published on the Reserve Bank website to your email Inbox via our email service or your mobile phone via SMS.
  • Maintain accurate and complete RITS membership records.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records relating to securities eligible for purchase under the Reserve Bank’s domestic market operations.
  • Allow access to the Reserve Bank’s Research Room or provide copies of archival records held by the Reserve Bank.
  • Allow access or provide presentations and tours to school teachers and students and other community groups visiting the Reserve Bank of Australia Museum or cater for the needs of visitors with a disability.
  • Assess the suitability of job applicants for employment with the Reserve Bank.
  • Respond to general enquiries.

Without relevant business, professional or personal contact details the Reserve Bank cannot engage with other organisations and individuals in relation to its functions and activities.

Use and Disclosure of Personal Information

Email and SMS service (subscriptions), event bookings and eligible securities forms

Some pages of this website provide the facility for visitors to join one of our free notification services. To join, visitors need to provide a valid email address and, if they want SMS notifications, mobile phone number. We may also provide the facility on this website to book an event, express interest in attending an event or submit a form in relation to eligible securities.

The Reserve Bank arranges its notifications and subscriptions (email and/or SMS), takes bookings for certain events, visits, workshops and conferences, and receives applications and notifications in relation to securities eligible for purchase under its domestic market operations, through a service provided by Leapfrog Publishers Pty Ltd trading as Swift Digital. Swift Digital is obliged to use any personal information it collects and handles on behalf of the Reserve Bank only for the purpose of providing these services. That information is held in Australia and can only be accessed by authorised Reserve Bank staff and authorised staff of Swift Digital. Email communications through the Swift Digital service will have rbasubscriptions@swiftdigital.com.au as the sender email address. This email address forwards all replies to rbainfo@rba.gov.au. Other uses

Except as notified in another personal information collection notice, your personal information submitted via this website, or via an email address or phone number listed on this website or on an App, will only be used for the purpose for which you provide it, or a secondary purpose referred to in this notice. It will not be added to a mailing or SMS list unless you have provided it for that purpose or you otherwise request that this be done.

As part of the Reserve Bank’s commitment to meeting the needs of the public for information about its policies and operations, the Reserve Bank may occasionally conduct non-compulsory surveys of users of Reserve Bank information or seek feedback in other ways. If the Reserve Bank invites you to complete a survey it will:

  • tell you the purpose of the survey; and
  • offer a facility to exit the survey at any time.

Disclosure - general

Except as referred to above in relation to email and/or SMS subscriptions, below in relation to security vulnerability information or as notified in another personal information collection notice, we will not disclose your personal information submitted via this website, or via an email address or phone number listed on this website or on an App, without your consent except where required or authorised by law or when authorised by Reserve Bank management in connection with investigations into possible breaches of the law.

Disclosure - security vulnerability information

Contact details and other personal information provided when reporting a security vulnerability on the Reserve Bank’s IT networks may also be disclosed to third parties involved in the investigation or remediation of security vulnerabilities in the Reserve Bank’s IT networks.

Disclosure - overseas recipients

Except as notified in another personal information collection notice, the personal information submitted via this website, or via an email address or phone number listed on this website or on an App, is of a kind which the Reserve Bank does not usually disclose to persons or organisations outside Australia. We may provide aggregate and anonymised information to support our relations with major international institutions or publish aggregate and anonymised information about our online communications or App usage.

Security of Personal Information

If you provide the Reserve Bank with personal information via email or any other means, your personal information may become part of the records of the Reserve Bank. The Reserve Bank takes all reasonable care to secure personal information and protect it against unauthorised access and misuse.
