The School of Education is proud to support future educators who are committed to equity and improving their communities through teaching and learning. Our Master of Teaching program prepares students for initial teaching licensure eligibility in Virginia. Students can choose from concentrations in early and elementary education, or secondary education (English, history/social studies, math and science).

Community Engagement

Our work is driven by the needs of our local, regional and national community. To best serve our communities and actively work to ensure equitable access to resources and education, we have a number of programs through our Office of Strategic Engagement to connect students to training and engagement opportunities.

  • Substitute Teaching the VCU Way aims to provide opportunities for VCU students to build professional competencies while working as a substitute teacher in local schools.
  • Innovative Teacher Pipeline is a professional learning process for pre-service teachers to engage in co-curricular course work along with seminar trainings and career coaching focused on in-depth implicit bias training.

RTR Residency Program

The RTR Residency program is an innovative graduate teacher residency that pairs residents with an experienced mentor for our most challenged schools in Richmond, Petersburg, Chesterfield and Henrico.

Student Teaching Requirements

All students pursuing the Master of Teaching program are required to complete requisite student teaching experiences. Please review our Teacher Preparation Application for more information on the requirements for practicum and student teaching. Interns and student teachers are typically assigned to public school teachers who have been trained as part of our Clinical Faculty Program. Learn more about this program.
